Quotes By Congesswoman Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Chisholm was the first black woman to serve in the United States Congress. An early education expert, Shirley Chisholm was elected to the New York Legislature in 1964 and to Congress in 1968, where she was a founding member of both the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Womens Political Caucus. She ran for president in 1972, winning 152 delegates in the Democratic primary but losing the partys nomination to George McGovern. Shirley Chisholm served in Congress until 1983. During her congressional career, Shirley Chisholm was noted for her support for womens rights, her advocacy of legislation to benefit those in poverty, and her opposition to the Vietnam war. Selected Shirley Chisholm Quotations †¢ I was the first American citizen to be elected to Congress in spite of the double drawbacks of being female and having skin darkened by melanin. When you put it that way, it sounds like a foolish reason for fame. In a just and free society it would be foolish. That I am a national figure because I was the first person in 192 years to be at once a congressman, black and a woman proves, I think, that our society is not yet either just or free. †¢ I want history to remember me not just as the first black woman to be elected to Congress, not as the first black woman to have made a bid for the presidency of the United States, but as a black woman who lived in the 20th century and dared to be herself. †¢ Of my two handicaps being female put more obstacles in my path than being black. †¢ Ive always met more discrimination being a woman than being black. †¢ My God, what do we want? What does any human being want? Take away an accident of pigmentation of a thin layer of our outer skin and there is no difference between me and anyone else. All we want is for that trivial difference to make no difference. †¢ Racism is so universal in this country, so widespread and deep-seated, that it is invisible because it is so normal. †¢ We Americans have a chance to become someday a nation in which all racial stocks and classes can exist in their own selfhoods, but meet on a basis of respect and equality and live together, socially, economically, and politically. †¢ In the end, anti-black, anti-female, and all forms of discrimination are equivalent to the same thing - anti-humanism. †¢ My greatest political asset, which professional politicians fear, is my mouth, out of which come all kinds of things one shouldnt always discuss for reasons of political expediency. †¢ The United States was said not to be ready to elect a Catholic to the Presidency when Al Smith ran in the 1920s. But Smiths nomination may have helped pave the way for the successful campaign John F. Kennedy waged in 1960. Who can tell? What I hope most is that now there will be others who will feel themselves as capable of running for high political office as any wealthy, good-looking white male. †¢ At present, our country needs womens idealism and determination, perhaps more in politics than anywhere else. †¢ I am, was, and always will be a catalyst for change. †¢ There is little place in the political scheme of things for an independent, creative personality, for a fighter. Anyone who takes that role must pay a price. †¢ One distressing thing is the way men react to women who assert their equality: their ultimate weapon is to call them unfeminine. They think she is anti-male; they even whisper that shes probably a lesbian. †¢ ... rhetoric never won a revolution yet. †¢ Prejudice against blacks is becoming unacceptable although it will take years to eliminate it. But it is doomed because, slowly, white America is beginning to admit that it exists. Prejudice against women is still acceptable. There is very little understanding yet of the immorality involved in double pay scales and the classification of most of the better jobs as for men only. (1969) †¢ Tremendous amounts of talent are being lost to our society just because that talent wears a skirt. †¢ Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth. (attributed to Chisholm; some sources attributed to Marian Wright Edelman) †¢ I am not anti-white, because I understand that white people, like black ones, are victims of a racist society. They are products of their time and place. †¢ The emotional, sexual, and psychological stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says, Its a girl. †¢ When morality comes up against profit, it is seldom profit that loses. †¢ To label family planning and legal abortion programs genocide is male rhetoric, for male ears. †¢ Which is more like genocide, I have asked some of my black brothers -- this, the way things are, or the conditions I am fighting for in which the full range of family planning services is available to women of all classes and colors, starting with effective contraception and extending to safe, legal terminations of undesired pregnancies at a price they can afford? †¢ Women know, and so do many men, that two or three children who are wanted, prepared for, reared amid love and stability, and educated to the limit of their ability will mean more for the future of the black and brown races from which they come than any number of neglected, hungry, ill-housed and ill-clothed youngsters. Pride in ones race, as will simple humanity, supports this view. †¢ It is not heroin or cocaine that makes one an addict, it is the need to escape from a harsh reality. There are more television addicts, more baseball and football addicts, more movie addicts, and certainly more alcohol addicts in this country than there are narcotics addicts. Roles of energy free essay sample

Discuss the roles of energy in the body In this assignment I am going to discuss the roles of energy in the body systems in relation to energy metabolisms, also explain the roles energy metabolisms have on the body system. Energy metabolisms- The Basal Metabolic Rate (BRM) refers to the amount of energy that our body needs to maintain homeostasis. Our BMR is determined by our total lean mass, expessically the muscle mass as it requires a lot of energy. Energy metabolism is all chemical reactions occurring in the human physiology which will involve releasing or using energy from chemical substances. The roles of energy in the body is to extract oxygen from the atmosphere and diffuse it into our bloodstream. The energy is vital from moving the body muscles in activities which are needed to be done every day. Aerobic (with oxygen)- Aerobic metabolism uses oxygen to create energy from carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Catabolism- The metabolic breakdown of complex molecules into simpler ones, which often results in a release of energy. Anaerobic metabolism (without oxygen)- Anaerobic metabolism is responsible for creating energy for movements without the use of oxygen. During exercise individuals rely more on anaerobic metabolism for energy. The body systems are†¦.. The cardiovascular system- The cardiovascular system has to provide oxygenated blood to the rest of the body at a constant speed to maintain enough energy in order for it to work. Enough energy has to be produced by the oxygen that is taken in. The cardiac output is very vital as it is connected to the energy production. Tissue yields are energy supplies where poor tissue perfusion result in critical shortages of energy and may often cause a diminished function in the body. Digestive system- Apart from breaking down and absorbing nutrients, the digestive system also converts foods into energy to help power muscles to contain good health. We need food to fuel our bodies for energy. These are put into their simplest forms. Glucose (sugars) Amino acids (makes up the proteins) Fatty acids ( makes up the fats) This is all broken down to give energy to every cell in our body. D1- Analyse how two named body systems interrelate to perform a named function/ functions. In this assignment I am going to analyse how the two named body systems for example circulatory system and respiratory system interrelate to performed named functions. The circulatory system and the respiratory system work closely together to ensure that organ tissues receive enough oxygen. Oxygen is required for cellular functions. The air that we breathe in is held in the lungs which is then transferred in to the blood. The blood is then circulated back up to the heart which is then pumped from the oxygenated blood from the lungs to the body. Additionally, the two body systems work together to remove the carbon dioxide, which is a metabolic waste product. Anabolism and catabolism energy make sure that energy breaks down. This energy is reused to keep the body working correctly. While the cardiovascular and respiratory system work together with energy metabolism. The respiratory system takes in oxygen from the lungs, which is then placed in the circulatory system which carries the nutrients around organs and cells in the body. Both systems in the human body work together to maintain homeostasis. Homeostasis is how the body keeps conditions inside it the same. For example 1. The amount of water inside the body 2. And keeping the body temperature at 37 degrees Homeostasis also comprises blood, tissue fluid and body cell contents and all the metabolic processes which take place. One way of getting homeostasis is through the rate of breathing. For example, if during exercise the levels of CO2 increases or if more oxygen is needed by the body the breathing rate of the individual will increase.

DODONG: You tell her. FATHER: All right, Dodong. DODONG: You will let me marry Teang? FATHER: Son, if that is your wish of course NARRATOR: There was a strange helpless light in his fathers eyes. For a while, Dodong even felt sorry for him about the diseased tooth. Then he confined his mind to dreaming of Teang and himself. Sweet young dream†¦ ***Dodong stood in the sweltering noon heat, sweating profusely, so that his camiseta was damp. He was afraid, he felt. Afraid of the house. Afraid also of Teang. (Teang screams continuously until she calms down a little. ) MOTHER: Come up, Dodong. It is over. (Silence) MOTHER: Dodong. Dodong. (Silence) FATHER: It is a boy. (Silence) MOTHER: Dodong, you come up. You come up. Dodong, Dodong. DODONG: Ill come up. (Dodong comes up. ) DODONG: Teang? FATHER: Shes sleeping. But you go in. (Dodong reaches for his son. ) * * * Blas was not Dodongs only child. Many more children came. For six successive, years a new child came along. Dodong did not want any more children, but they came. It seemed the coming of children could not be helped. Dodong got angry with himself sometimes. Teang did not complain, but the bearing of children told on her. She was shapeless and thin now, even if she was young. She cried sometimes, wishing she had not married. She did not tell Dodong this, not wishing him to dislike her. Yet she wished she had not married. Not even Dodong, whom she loved. There has been another suitor, Lucio, older than Dodong by nine years, and that was why she had chosen Dodong. Lucio had married another after her marriage to Dodong, but he was childless until now. She wondered if she had married Lucio, would she have borne him children. Maybe not either. That was a better lot. But she loved Dodong. One night, as he lay beside his wife, he rose and went out of the house. (Dodong stays silent while looking into the moon light, then comes back inside. Blas will enter the house. He cannot sleep. ) DODONG: Blas, why won’t you go to sleep? BLAS: I just can’t. DODONG: You better go to sleep. It is late. BLAS: Itay DODONG: Yes Blas? BLAS: I am going to marry Tena. She accepted me tonight. (Dodong stays still. ) BLAS: Itay, you think it over. I love Tena and I want her. DODONG: Come to the backyard with me. (Dodong and Blas go out. DODONG: You want to marry Tena. BLAS: Yes. DODONG: Must you marry? BLAS: I will marry Tena. (Dodong keeps silent. ) BLAS: You have objections, Itay? DODONG: Son n-none NARRATOR: But deep inside, Dodong did not want Blas to marry yet. He prayed hard to God for help to stop Blas from marrying. But he was helpless. He could not do anything. Youth must triumph now. Love must triumph now . Afterwards, it will be life. As long ago Youth and Love did triumph for Dodong. And then Life. Dodong looked wistfully at his young son in the moonlight. He felt extremely sad and sorry for him.

Create a Website Link From a MySQL Database With PHP

Create a Website Link From a MySQL Database With PHP Often people new to working with databases  are able to fetch the information they need and echo it onto a page, but then they struggle with figuring out how to link the results for use on a website. This is a simple process in which you echo the appropriate HTML and call the URL in the middle of it.  You can use PHP to connect to and manipulate databases. The most popular database system used with PHP is MySQL. Together, PHP and MySQL are cross-platform. Case study regarding to organisational effectivness theories

Regarding to organisational effectivness theories - Case Study Example Built in 1891, the company had high potential in the past. However, despite the numerous subsidiaries and an enormously large work force, the company failed to maintain a good performance level. In the 1990s, the company lost around $2.2 billion although a lot of focus had been on the improvement of performance. There are a number of reasons that are responsible for the failure of the company. The first and foremost reason for the dwindling for the progress of Philips was the fact that there had always been the problem of the relative distribution of power between the national organizations and the product divisions of the company. The product divisions were responsible for the manufacturing and the Research & Development sector while the national organizations were to monitor the day to day business of the company in different countries. Technically, the product divisions should have been given more importance, as they focused on and acted globally; though the same did not hold valid when it came to the real scenario. Since the company originally was from Netherlands, most of the managers of the company were Dutch. The Board of members belonging to a particular region posed a risk to the working of the national organizations. The national organizations were basically designed to work autonomously so that the needs of different countries, being different from each other, could be served. At times, the purpose of providing of autonomy was not really fulfilled. Yet the national organizations were still more important than the product divisions. There were attempts that had been made to give more power and credit to the product divisions, which acted universally, rather than the national organizations, which differed across countries. However there was little that changed the situation. Along with structural issues that the company was facing, there were environmental issues too. The increased

Managing Organizational Change Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Managing Organizational Change - Research Paper Example o be answerable to each other on the same tier as well as to the owners and stakeholders of the organizations who have invested within them for so long. Perhaps it would be a good exercise to bring in the change smoothly. This shall make the entire process an easy one and put the crux of the exercise safely within the grasps of the people who are ready to undertake such a change for their own good. This change element within the domains of the organization could be handled if there are proper mechanisms in place and which look to provide the remedy for the quandaries that employees find themselves engulfed in every now and then. It is important that these employees know what they need to do in order to remain satisfied with their jobs. This will make them feel secure with the jobs that they have got and not try to hop on every opportunity that they can get. An organizational change setting that does not bring in a sense of optimism within the workplace realms is indeed a classic case of failure (Douglas, 2009). This is because organizational change has to happen smoothly and without any hindrances whatsoever. It makes the task pretty easier if things are handled in a proactive manner rather than something else. Also the organizational change should be such that the employees are told about the change beforehand because no employee appreciates the idea of changing every now and then. It has been a fact that change is a constant factor that takes place almost everywhere but since it is something that is seen as undesirable, it takes sheer resistance on the part of the employees regularly. In order to make sure that the organizational change is successful, it is imperative that this change is backed up with improving the morale of the employees because this will ensure... This report stresses that the impacts of resources that are available within an organization are severely significant nonetheless. This is because they have to find out the basics related with the organizational change and how this change is going to showcase better employee morale and more dedication at the end of the day. It would also mean that the employees remain satisfied with what they are receiving in terms of the resources and how contented they are in knowing the fact that their resources are being well-equipped nonetheless. The resources’ discussion is always an important one because it tells the employees beforehand how significant they are for the sake of the organization and what measures need to be taken to make sure that they become important with the passage of time. This indeed is a symbiotic relationship which should always be encouraged and supported across the board, at all levels. This article makes a conclusion that it is necessary to comprehend how sound an organizational change strategy would work for the sake of the organization under question. If this is proper and within the frameworks as has been suggested and decided upon, then this will mean serious success for the employees who are working at different levels as well as the employers who seek retention of their employees and better usability of the available resources at their disposal. One must understand that these are serious attributes that come attached with the morale discussions of the employees and should always be treated as such.

Cleopatras hand Essay Example for Free

Cleopatras hand Essay After listening to Cleopatras poor advice he then flees the battle to follow her, his heart. Once Antony has recovered from the embarrassment of fleeing battle he regains the upper hand in a violent scene with a messenger from Caesar who has kissed Cleopatras hand. This scene parallels a similar scene between Cleopatra and a messenger when she found out about Antonys marriage to Octavia. Throughout the argument there are recurrent references to food, love and the supernatural. The hyperbolic language is an open expression of their excessive love and passion for each other. Antony shouts and makes a lot of noise throughout the argument as he is trying to regain his once respected position. He is totally aware of the fact he is loosing power to Cleopatra this is why he is acting in such an arrogant manner toward the messenger and his lover. In Act three scenes eight, nine and ten the battle of Actium is about to begin and there is fierce fighting and violence in the next three scenes but the audience would not see this as it is set offshore. In Act four Scene twelve Antony is infuriated as the Egyptian fleet has surrendered and he feels Cleopatra has betrayed him. He takes a very Roman view of Cleopatra and refers to her as a witch. Antony foresees his own demise and this is delivered to us through imagery in his speech; Osun, thy uprise shall I see no more. This is suggesting Antonys thoughts about his suicide. The two lovers have a bitter quarrel in which Antony uses very graphic imagery for example; Octavia plough they visage up/ With her prepared nails! Cleopatra flees in terror and goes to her monument. The uses of hyperbolical and simple language throughout this scene show the contrast between the two main characters in their struggle for power. At the end of this scene Antony has the upper hand as Cleopatra has left, but she soon regains power over him. Act four Scene fourteen shows Antony at a remarkably low point. Mardian, a messenger from Cleopatra brings news of her death and Antony decides it must be the end for him too. But Cleopatra is not actually dead. Even in Antonys low times his soldiers would rather die than kill him as we find out when Eros kills himself. Even as Antony falls on his sword he is making reference to love and sex: A bridegroom in my death and run intot / As to a lovers bed. Cleopatras power over him it at its most evident when he kills himself because of her death. Whilst he is bleeding to death he finds out that she is not dead and has a very unusual reaction. It shows his great love for her yet again, even thought she had lead him to make the most flawed decision possible, killing himself. Even in Act four Scene fifteen, Antonys death scene, we are aware of Cleopatras power over Antony. She takes control and wants to speak even though Antony is dying, interrupting his dying words; No, let me speak Cleopatra says this so she can have the final word, though this is not intended as she does love him. As Antony is dying he speaks about himself in the third person, giving himself a regal address to prove he has achieved honour even if it is in death. Not Caesars valour hath oerthrown Antony,/But Antonys hath triumphd on itself. Cleopatra changes her tone considerably after Antonys death. She becomes very subdued and dignified which leads to a restrained end to a tempestuous scene. Cleopatra ends the play in Act five with all the power, as Antony is dead and she still has the final scene to herself which is very unusual as a female character is never given the final scene. She has achieved power over Antony in his life and his death proving she is a domineering and ingenious woman, much to the Romans disapproval. In conclusion, Shakespeares handling of the balance of power is wonderfully documented through the plot of the play and through his use of language. The lifestyle enjoyed by Antony and Cleopatra is shown through the hyperbolical poetry.

Personal Narrative: My First Day at School Essay -- essays research p

My first day at school My first day at school was a new adventure for me. I had to wear a school uniform: a blue dress and handmade leather sandals. Having run around all but naked for the first eight years of my life, it was very exciting. At school we learnt about Australian culture and its social classes as well as social classes worldwide. Throughout my studies I learnt that Australia wasn't a classless society. The class to which a person belonged determined how they were treated and we learnt through two particular films:' Educating Rita' (Willy Russell, 1983) and 'My Fair Lady' (Bernard Shaw, 1964) that it is indeed possible to break the mould and change where you end up in life. Rita is a twenty-six year old hairdresser from Liverpool who wants an education. Not the sort of education that would get her a better job or higher wages, but an education that would give her more choices and freedom. Rita wants to be a different person and lead a different sort of lifestyle she has led previously. ?Educating Rita? describes the tests and alterations that the young hairdresser has to go through to develop from a person with very little education to someone who passes her exams with distinctions. Frank Bryant teaches comparative literature and it is his job to teach Rita. Frank has lost all enthusiasm for his job. He loathes most of his students, and the main purpose of the rows of classical literature in the bookshelves in his office is to hide the whiskey bottles. Rita is seen as a lower class citizen. She has very little education and describes a religious painting as ?pornography of its days?, she drops the end consonants of her words and swears often. As she?s walking down towards her house it?s raining and looks ve... ...hange in confidence. Just like Rita, she has developed a sense of worth and no longer endures all of the insults like she use to and this is easily seen when she exclaims , ?I won?t be passed over?I want a little kindness?.am not the dirt under you feet?I stand alone without you? In both of the films we are swayed to side with Rita and Eliza because they are battling against impossible odds by trying to attain education. We are led to disprove of Frank?s and Henry?s attitudes towards their students and social class because they have everything that most people dream of, yet they don?t seem as thankful. Both of these films are displaying a uniform message to its audience. Education, in another word, is emancipation. It is the liberation of a person from a member of a stereotypical society to an active agent who can choose and change where he or she ends up in life.

The Ugly Truth About Football - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1238 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2019/04/01 Category Society Essay Level High school Topics: Truth Essay Did you like this example? Football is one of Americas favorite past time. We love seeing colossal men knocking the crap out of each other every Sunday during the fall. But with every hit, it can lead to a concussion. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Ugly Truth About Football" essay for you Create order A concussion is a brain injury that may be caused by a blow to the head, face, neck or elsewhere on the body with an impulsive force transmitted to the head (2016 And 2017 Ncaa Football Rules and Interpretations FR-113) [2]. I personally played sports in High School and luckily never got a concussion, but some of my friends did. When talking to them they seemed to be different. Maybe their head hurts or that they are upset that they could not practice at all. Some of my friends quit their sport because of their concussion. That made me wonder, should changes be made to make sports safer? Organizations like the National Collegiate Athletic Association or the National Football League must make changes in regulations to protect athletes from a concussion. Paul S. Auerbach in his January 20, 2018, Wall Street Journal titled How to Save Football Players Brains, said During a high-school season, one study finds, nearly 1 in 5 players on any given team will suffer a concussion. [1]. That is crazy. But who do we blame for it? The leagues are to blame for this. Theres one area outside the NCAAs purview that deserves a good public hearing the distribution of hundreds of millions of dollars generated by the College Football Playoff (Duncan and Rolle) [2]. If the College Football Playoff can generate this money, a good portion of it should be devoted towards research and programs that deal with concussions. What is hard to understand is how the NCAA devotes resources to these national challenges, using money generated by its March Madness basketball tournament, but the College Football Playoff does not (Duncan and Rolle) [4]. The College Football Playoff does not like being told what to do by others. Over the past year, the Knight Commission h as urged the College Football Playoff board of managers to adopt these two changes, but the CFP has rejected our recommendations (Duncan and Rolle) [2]. The Knight Commission is a board of people who make sure that student-athletes are getting their education, but how can they when every time a football gets hit and gets a concussion? The CFP is to blame for not giving the students athletes proper resources and preventions against concussions. In recent events, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), has been linked to football players who have received trauma to the head multiple times. CTE is a bit of gray area but it has been proven to cause death. Twenty-one-year-old Tyler Hilinski, a quarterback at Washington State, developed early stages of CTE and took his own life in January 2018. When the autopsy came back it showed that he had a brain of a sixty-five-year-old (Auerbach) [3]. This is very interesting because usually, the quarterback does not receive contact as often when comparing by positions. His parents say their son did not have a history of concussions or head trauma, though he did take a hit against Arizona last season that rocked him (Auerbach) [2]. While this statement may be true, athletes have spoken said that they have hidden their concussions. Howard Fendrich, in his December 26, 2011, Miami Herald article titled Some NFL Players Still Willing to Hide Concussions, quotes Mike Sellers about NFL players hiding concussions: You want to continue to play. Youre a competitor. Youre not going to tell on yourself. There have been times Ive been dinged, and theyve taken my helmet from me, and Id snatch my helmet back and get back on the field, A lot of guys wouldnt say anything because a lot of guys wouldnt think anything during the game, until afterward when they have a headache or they cant remember certain things [1]. Parents should be aware of the possibilities of their child playing football and know the symptoms of concussion to protect them no matter what age they are. While so football has been known to possibly cause serious conditions in the players future, there are positive of playing football. From personal experience, football taught me important life skills like teamwork, responsibilities, and discipline. I am not saying that the benefits outweigh the risk but these are necessary life skills to learn. Government officials like Florida Senator Marco Rubio have noted the dangers of children playing football but then said this, You know what else comes with some risk? Life (Belson) [4]. Every day people take risk and people who play football are risking their future health every day. The athletes who play football could be placed in a better position to protect themselves from concussions, but the changes will be a dramatic game changer. Tackling should only take place at the middle school level or higher (Auerbach) [3]. Its had been proven that with every tackle delivered or received that the brain is deteriorating. These children are the future of America and if they get seriously injured their lives would be changed forever. At the high school level and below practices should not have live tackling session. This will help a significant amount since, in practice, teams can learn the fundamentals of safe tackling and not have their players own teammate be the cause of a concussion. This not saying the game should not have to tackle at all, it is saying how should be no tackling at all during practice. If a player is tackled and their head hits the ground first, they should be taken out of the next play to be evaluated by an athletic trainer to make sure that the y have sustained no injury. This may make the game longer, but it is for the safety of the players. With these possible changes that could take place, it can make the game of football a little bit safer. The bottom line is that change needs to be made. It first starts off with organizations like the College Football Playoff use a part of their revenue to do some research dealing with players safety towards concussion. Then Parents need to be notified on how letting their child play football can be a huge risk in their future. Lastly, the change needs to be implemented and enforce to make sure that the children are playing at the safest level possible. While football may have an abundant amount of dangers its benefits are not to be taken lightly by children important life skills. These young children do not want to stop playing football, but in order for them to play, major changes need to be made to make the game safe and it starts by informing others.
