Themes in ‘A Small, Good Thing’ Life consists of persistence and lethargy; patience and tragedy; felicity and suffering; experiences and failures; ups and downs; and accepting the good with the bad and the bad along with the good. These details create ‘slices of life’ moments in our lives. As we read Raymond Carver’s short stories, we see these beautiful moments come to pass. One of the short stories that presented this was ‘A Small, Good Thing’, where Carver demonstrates occurring themes of loneliness and helplessness, limitations of communication, and human connections to create multiple ‘slices of life’ moments. Loneliness/Helplessness The theme of loneliness and helplessness occurs often throughout ‘A Small, Good Thing’. Raymond introduces us to the baker, who lives a lonely life. There is no trace of other coworkers that work him and we do not have much of a background story of him. Whenever the baker is mentioned in the story, we get the impression that he is at the bakery 24/7. The baker says â€Å"What do you want at this hour. It’s midnight†¦I work day and night here, trying to make ends meet† (Carver 225). The baker may live a lonely life since he has no children and we do not see any signs of him having a partner. Throughout the story, the theme of helplessness is also present.
